Popping a Joint
Patrizia had this experience where after tearing her peoneus tertius tendon, she was in pain for almost a year. No physio or RMT had really been able to help her. Then after a year, her physio tried something new. She attached a 5lb weight to Patrizia's ankle and put her in plantar flexion hanging off a table. After 20mins Patrizia heard a pop and her ankle gave way and her ROM increased by about 4 inches. The pain was also gone. Her physio said that she wanted to wait to do this because of the inflammation that was there before.

What treatments to use when?
So far, we have been taught several techniques that have varied effects but most are general. I am still at an early stage of discerment as to what I am feeling on a client and so am also at an early stage of understanding what treatment to use for it.
However, generally speaking, there has been much progress.
Issues that I have been encountered and labelled so far:
Hypertonicity
Kiphosis
Tender Points
Trigger Points
Crepidis
Fascial Restrictions
Muscle Imbalances
Postural Assessment
Holding
Joint Play
What are the best tools to treat these??????

Massage Trade Conference
Today, I went to the massage trade conference in Burlington, ON. It was great. Tons of free samples and a lot of high tech goodies. I got a Creative Visual Reality session with blue led lights flashing in my eyes, A thai coconut stem facial, a luxury thumper foot massage, a cryoderm neck treatment and some acupunture and acupressure work to top it off.
Three statements kept coming up.
1. Why take 5 minutes to do massage work in an area when you can do it quicker with this product/technique.
2. Why ignore an area that is in pain and start your massage somewhere else when you can use my product on that area of pain right away.
3. Why work so long on fixing imbalances when you can work on the root of the cause instead.

Buyer Beware
Your doctor is 'illiterate' when it comes to most bodywork modalities. Even though there are valid and quite useful treatments available for patient care.
So you can't really count on him/her to give you the proper referral.
On the other hand, body workers also are mostly unaware of who to refer you to, if they can't help. Not only that, but there is, despite regulation and continuing education requirements, some seriously inept practitioners.
So what do you do? Get a good referral, of course!!

Physical Medicine
I heard today, Dr George Roth refer to bodywork as 'Physical Medicine'. Interesting!
